Looking back on those golden days, Jane realized that she had never gotten that wish. For years after, Daddy continued to grouse about his unsatisfying job, and Mommy continued not to make the time to read the books she wanted.
In the middle of one the beau's dulling play-by-plays, Jane was jolted by the thought that she was falling into exactly the same trap. She hated her job too. And she was always putting off the little pleasures that she was so sure were the right antidote to her boredom. The thought was accompanied by an overwhelming feeling of desperation, a tightening in her throat, a flush in her cheeks.
Gathering up her things, she lurched to her feet, tipping her chair and mumbling vague apologies about having forgotten something important and that she had to be going. While leaning over to pick up the chair, she dragged her hair into her coffee and elbowed her half-full dessert plate off the edge of the table. It draped its contents across her shoe and the top of her open purse.
She backed away from her confused co-workers, trailing sugary slime and dripping Colombian blend. She jolted to a stop against something tall and tweedy.
| "Excuse me, miss, but you seem to have lost your context," said a warm, rich voice, which sounded not at all annoyed, if slightly amused. |
