She was cute, if you didn't look at the fangs. Darling soft fur and sleak black skin. But those fangs. All blood and flesh rending there. No secret about what they were for.

But the creature itself was beautiful.

Harlan considered touching its sleeping flanks, but though better of it. Even under the heavy drugs of the tranquilizing rifle, you never could tell. With one hand, he loosened the shackles from his waist and deftly snapped them around the four paws. They twitched, revealing long and beautiful claws. Claws that were tinged darkly at their base with a brown and crusty substance which Harlan recognized too easily.

Convinced that he had her bound, he picked up the body. It was surprisingly dense. He was careful to keep a firm grip on the neck... just in case.

"Hurry up!" Jake called from the pod. "Thirty seconds to cycle!" Harlan had begun working at the zoo as a form of therapy. Murray threw down the script. Rising out of his plush leathery chair, he tapped cigar ashes over the open pages.
