Harlan had begun working at the zoo as a form of therapy. His shrink had told him that it would be a good idea for him to develop an outside interest. Something that would allow him to interact with other and to relax and to think about other things. 

His shrink had not originally been pleased at his choice of working with with animals. "People, Harlan. I want you to get out and interact with people. People you can have conversations with," Jessica Stoneybrook said with a frown. 

"But there will be people at the zoo as well as animals," Harlan said, calmly. I'm going to be taking classes from professionals. I'm going to be interacting with other volunteers. And I do find that interacting with animals helps me to relax," he said. And Jessica had had to agree that his explanations seemed reasonable. 

He hadn't told her about the fangs yet.
