Looka had given up dreaming while the children were young. Before she had met Pongo, she had been deeply into the drug scene, and her dreams came to her easily, in technicolor. They had appeared to be life enhancing dreams, but they had never driven her to DO anything--expect to track down more poppies or grass or whatever was in season and fall into another dream world. Pongo showed up at that point in her life when she was always looking for the next fresh stand of opiates. He had hung out with her hippie friends, but he was not one of them. His drive fascianted her. He saw something in her. She didn't know what. When he invited her to follow him to a new part of the forest she did so--giving up drugs cold turkey and following him to a new place. Then the children had come. She had stopped dreaming.
Now she needed a new kind of dream. But what? She wasn't sure, but she knew that this dream would not involve men, or children, or drugs, or anything from her old life.
That night she dreamed of a flying giraffe. It was absurd. And yet, when she opened her eyes... what was that strange shadow passing overhead?
