He awoke with the koala's malicious laughter echoing in his ears. "What's the matter, wimp?" they sneered. "Want some more? It'll cost ya." Frederick realized that the koalas were not really his friends and were only having a good laugh at his expense. He remembered that, in fact, koalas were from an entirely different continent and must've only come to Africa to cause trouble. He was no closer to his goal. A single tear ran all the way down his long long neck to the ground.
And then he heard the men tramping through the underbrush. "There are the escaped koalas!" they cried, and threw their nets. "We'll soon have them back in the cages where they belong."
"Hey, there's a giraffe!" one said. "We've been looking for a new giraffe to take over the hang-gliding act. Do you think we could teach him to do it?"
"Teach him?" one of the koalas asked rhetorically.
"Why he's a natural! I've never seen a giraffe with such obvious inclinations towards flight."
Frederick was flattered at first, thinking how nice it was that the koala saw Frederick's potential and was actively jockeying to get Frederick the job.
And then Frederick remembered how that self-same koala had bitch-slapped him only three minutes ago. No... Frederick was done trusting koalas. They were all cute and fuzzy on the outside, but you just couldn't trust them. Frederick still wanted to fly, but he was going to do it on his terms and it wasn't going to involve hallucinogenic eucalyptus leaves or hang-gliders. Frederick was going back to his original plan- he was going to find a reason to fly. He was going to find the necessity.
After that, it was going to be up to mother nature to create the means.
