Well, it’s a good thing my LiveJournal isn’t a potted plant.

There’ve been some pretty major events since my last update:

  1. We had a second ultrasound and discovered that we’re having a boy. All his digits and such are accounted for, and developmentally he’s on target for his age. (I put a few scans here.)
  2. We flew out to Missouri for a few days to visit my family. We had lots of fun, especially with my little nephews. They also gave us a baby shower. Little by little the baby’s room is starting to take shape. We still have a lot to do, though.
  3. I got laid off. It was kind of a surprise, since it was unrelated to my job performance, but I think in the long run it’ll end up being good for me. I had been with the same company for kind of a long time by software industry standards. Now I’m interviewing again for the first time in eight and a half years, oh joy. I had been using their laptop as my main computer, so I was offline for a while getting my old one upgraded (then for another while, because we painted the little home office room).

Now we’re going to see a twilight showing of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The commercials on television have me salivating. I’m leaving all my fanboy expectations behind and giving it a clean slate. I expect I’ll have some things to say about it later.

  1. HITCHHIKERS GUIIIIIDE!

I’m seeing it tonight as well. I think.
And holy crap, a kid! I’m sure you’ll be one hell of a dad, and will no doubt raise him better than the dumbasses upstairs who let their baby stay up until 2 am.

    • Aw, thank you, I hope I will be. If he takes after me, he’ll be a very sound sleeper eventually. But thankfully for the meanwhile we aren’t quite so adjacent to our neighbors.

I hear that for the first couple of months, the baby’s on whatever internal clock it’s born with, and there’s not much you can do about it. (Except give Mom a nice stiff drink a little bit before feeding time, haha.)

    • Thanks Alice. Yeah, this update was way overdue. I’ve missed you guys. Although I have been lurking a bit so it’s not really fair, I stay reasonably caught up on my friends list while being something of a hermit myself.

    • Thank you Quinn, although I’ll send your good luck right back to you, as I think you need it at least as much. (And I’ll be on IM more regularly now. Ironically enough, in the month or two before I got laid off, I was actually working even harder than usual so I wasn’t logging in as often.)

  2. oh my gosh, a kidaloo!! Right now I’d be going crazy thinking about names (how about Nigel? so you can make plans for him? Oh, I’m sure you’ve planned something better . . . the Old Testament is a great source of names, haha). Anyway, I hope he’s a calm baby for mommy’s and your sake.

Good luck with the job hunt . . . because i can’t seem to not get into car accidents, I’m having to look for steady employment too, now. i’m not saying what kind, because the baby might read this. Haha, anyway, I’ll have my fingers crossed for you.

Hell, my livejournal is a Christmas Cactus.

    • Thanks. :) Yeah, it seems like the continents tend to shift all at once here in BryceLand. But a lot of this change is welcome, and the job thing could be much worse. I’ve actually been through even more simultaneous upheaval than this before, so that gives me some perspective.

  3. That’s my kinda mood! šŸ˜€
The ultrasounds look great! (Belated)Congratulations! I’m sure you’ll be a wonderful father.

I’ve been hearing so many lay off stories lately, and sometimes it can be a good way out. Good luck to you!

Oh I have been really curious about seeing Hitchhiker’s Guide so I can’t wait to hear what you have to say.

    • Thank you! I’m looking forward to it. He’ll know which John is which by the time he can talk. :)

And I think you’re right, the layoff could very well end up being the best thing for me. It’s good to shake things up every once in a while, and I sort of think I was due for a big recharging.
