Once upon a time a leprechaun got tired of giving everybody wishes and directing them to pots of gold, so he took one of his gold pieces and threw it into the bottom of a well. He waited and waited, but never heard a splash. He peered down into the bottom of the well . . . but he couldn't see his reflection. The bucket had gone long ago, from the looks of the well, so he went and got one of his leprechaun buddies to help him find his piece of gold (and his wish). He didn't tell his friend what the wish was, not because he believed that old superstition about it not coming true, but because he didn't want to share. If it worked, his buddy could throw in his own piece of gold.

So the leprechaun (whose name, by the way, was Louie) tied a rope around his waist, and his friend (whose name was Larry) started lowering him down into the well. It got darker and darker, until the leprechaun could see the stars shining in the sky up at the top of the well. "It's a good thing we had a piece of magic rope lying around," he thought to himself, "or this would never have worked." He went further and further down, and he still hadn't reached the water. But he started to see what looked like stars in the walls all around him.

This sort of creeped the leprechaun out. In the meantime, Larry, who was rather a lazy leprechaun, was beginning to get some aches and pains in his shoulders from holding the rope.
