Crouching down, compressed to the point of widening, latched in place as tension builds, the taste of blood floods around her tongue. Back feet rotate vertically, embedding nails into the carpet, ready to act as the single point of contact as the she-huntress launches into flight. A flash of light, perhaps a primal memory, guides her flight which is too fast for conscious consideration.

Now in suspended time, she hangs in the air, surveying her prey from her celestial vantage. Frame by frame, she completes the necessary arc, already planning the first side-to-side ripping and deep, jaw-pleasing bites into the deserving dust ball. Her forepaws engage like landing gears and saliva spirals across her eyes, she has started her descent. The dust ball never suspected its fate.

Monica came home to find the lamp reduced to shards, her piano keys covered in potting soil, and one of her favorite pillows sporting nasty perforations at the seams. . . . since dust balls, of course, have no self-awareness. But for the zillions of microscopic creatures lurking in the dust ball, it was different.
