Monica came home to find the lamp reduced to shards, her piano keys covered in potting soil, and one of her favorite pillows sporting nasty perforations at the seams.
"Pouncer!" There was no answer. She stomped into the kitchen, dropped the groceries onto the counter, and called again, "Pouncer!" Still nothing. "Probably under the bed, or better yet, chewing up my speaker wires again."
Monica stomped into the living room, swept up the ceramic of her lamp, and then turned to wipe off the piano keys. There was something wrong about the tracks. Under closer observation, there were TWO sets, and one of them definately wasn't cat tracks. And one set wasn't made with dirt... it was blood.
Monica felt her throat clench.
"Pouncer?"
Just then, Monica felt a cold breeze, saw the curtains waving unaccountably, and felt chilled to the bone. Not a normal chill. The evening air hadn't been that cold. It was a supernatural chill. One that shook her to the core. One beyond all proportion.
She hear a tiny meow behind her, and turned to see a black cat that was not Pouncer. It's image seemed to shimmer, and she stepped closer. Suddenly, she realized it was a ghost cat.
"Where have you come from?" Monica asked. The cat did not account for itself. But suddenly, she remembered having seen this cat before. It was the one that had belonged to her long dead aunt Harriet. The one that had been accidentally run over by Harriet, a year to the day before Harriet died, some 7 years ago. It was a cat that reappeared at her family members' homes at crucial moments. Sometimes before life-threatening events. Sometimes at moments of near escape. Sometimes to witness evil deads. Other times at the meetings of star crossed lovers. "Pouncer?" Monica called, tentatively.
The ghost cat, Lynx, looked at her, meowed, crossed over the pairs of tracks running across her floor, jumped up on the window ledge, and then jumped out. No. Did not jump out. Simply disappeared.
Why had Lynx come and what did this have to do with the disappearance of Pouncer?
Monica feared that she would never know.
