. . . since dust balls, of course, have no self-awareness. But for the zillions of microscopic creatures lurking in the dust ball, it was different.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! they cried, as they cat came down upon them. A ride through a cat's digestive system was not what they had planned for their day. Going on a long hike through the thick, plush carpeting. Building a camp fire. Singing songs they remembered from their summers at Camp Microbius. Now that was a good time. They had just finished infecting the gigantic creates who lived in the house. A hard week's work that merited a vacation. Instead, they would be buffeted by all sorts of enzymes and would have to fight for their very survival. They reached for their life preserves and paddles and hoped that a cat-worthy object that could be used as a raft would float their way.

Pouncer burped gently, but failed to dislodge the sticky hairiness imbedded in her throat. She coughed again. Meanwhile, a billion tiny microbes danced along her esophagus. Tickle tickle tickle.

Pouncer coughed again. Louder. Harder. Fiercer.

And within her, one of the paramecium scouts rubbed two fibers together deftly twixt his cilia. The fibers sparked to life.

Pouncer felt a tingling, burning sensation in her throat. She coughed again, belching the tiniest puff of smoke. Her throat tightened, and deep within her a decision was made that perhaps it was better to let this dust bunny escape.

The ball was projected in a thin stream of moist ooze. At the center of it all, a crowd gathered around the brave little Paramecium. "Good boy, Jonah!"

And above the ball, an enormous foot tapped. "Bad kitty, Pouncer! Bad, bad kitty!"

The End
