I’m moving to North Carolina at the end of the month! I’m very excited. I feel underprepared for the move, given how little time is left and how it seems to sprint away from me. I’m going to have to get rid of a bunch of stuff, hopefully enough that packing won’t take me that long. I’ve already gone through some of it, and I’m amazed at how much I could still eliminate. I thought I had done a better job of streamlining my possessions when I switched apartments last year.

  1. Good luck with your move! North Carolina is a really pretty state (at least the parts of it I’ve seen).

Best thing I ever did when moving: hired professionals. It’s totally worth the money to have other people carry your stuff for you.

    • Thank you Alice. Yeah, it is a very pretty place. I’ll be in Durham, which I think strikes the perfect balance between suburban convenience, natural beauty, and (especially with its proximity to Raleigh) urban entertainment options. At least, appropriate entertainment options for my semi-old-fart lifestyle. As long as TMBG comes through every year or so I’m happy. :)

I’m definitely planning to hire people, at least to help me load my truck on this end, but I was planning to drive the truck down myself. But come to think of it, I’m not sure how I’d get my car down there… hmm. I should look into movers that’ll take me door-to-door.

I’ve experienced more than my share of moves, and we’ve learned that U-Haul trucks are not a cool idea. They’re a pain in the ass to drive for any span of time exceeding an hour (we had one so nasty that my mother needed me to help her shift its gears – a friend trailed in our car, and we drove her back), so we’ve just basically had everything tossed into the moving van, keeping only the truly special things in the trunk of the car.

Basically, it boils down to this: Things bad. Clutter = evil.
