A little further on, the man came to a flock of sheep wandering down the road. Unlike the humans he'd met, the sheep seemed to be in complete agreement-they knew which way they wanted to go, and they had no hesitation about taking up the whole road doing it. The man admired their confidence and singlemindedness, and asked if he could join them. The sheep obligingly agreed, and so the man traveled along the road with the sheep for quite a long time. People they passed took him for the shepherd, and, remembering his wish from long ago, he wanted to set them straight. So he made a sign for himself that read "NOT the shepherd" and wore it around his neck.

One day the man and the sheep came to a large town. Suddenly the man found that he was feeling protective of the sheep. The conversation on the road had not been deep, but still the man felt a sense of kinship with the sheep, and was afraid that city life would be too much for them, and that he would not be powerful enough to protect them.

The sheep, at the same time, had no qualms. They felt their strength to be in their numbers, and were feeling a sense of glowing satisfaction that they would be able to protect the man (of whom they had also grown quite fond, even giving him a nickname in Sheepish) from the bickering hordes of his own kind that they saw lurking on the horizon.
